Ancient Statue Fossil Ammonite Rock Prehistoric Specimen 6lbs. Fossil8 X1

Here we have a highly detailed, multi-specimen cluster fossil consisting of several ammonites embedded together in a single matrix rock. The piece features several prehistoric, spiral-shelled marine mollusks of varying sizes beautifully nestled together. A few ammonites display intricate, fern-like patternings across their surfaces, known as suture lines. The ammonite situated at the very top exhibits a distinct, fiery flash of red and orange iridescence. This colorful, gem-like quality is often referred to as ammolite.

Known as a thanatocoenosis, that which forms when a group of prehistoric ammonites die and their shells accumulate together on the ancient sea floor. After the soft tissues rapidly decayed, the hard aragonite shells were swiftly buried beneath heavy layers of marine sediment, mud, and sand, protecting them from weathering and scavengers. Over millions of years, intense pressure compressed these sediment layers into solid sedimentary rock.

Mineral-rich groundwater permeated the microscopic pores and empty internal chambers of the shells. Through a chemical process called permineralization, dissolved minerals like calcite and aragonite slowly crystallized inside the chambers, transforming the organic shells into solid stone. Fossilized over 100s of years, dug up, and polished, waiting to be displayed in your beautiful home!
